Why do some opportunities always pass us by? The ancients said missing out isn't necessarily bad luck

A few years ago, a young man came to the Taoist temple.

He said:

"Brother, I think the biggest problem in my life isn't a lack of opportunities, but rather always missing them."

A job opportunity came.

He hesitated.

A relationship opportunity came.

He recoiled.

A business opportunity came.

He feared failure.

Looking back a few years later, he realized that many important turning points in his life had indeed appeared before him.

But he never seized them in the end.

In fact, this situation is not uncommon.

Many people are not without opportunities.

Instead, when opportunities arise, they always let them slip away at the last moment.

Why do people tend to shy away when opportunities arise?

Opportunity often means change.

And change means risk.

Therefore, when truly important things come before us, people tend to experience:

  • Fear of failure.

  • Worry about loss.

  • Self-doubt.

  • Overthinking.

These emotions can lead to constant hesitation.

Often, missing an opportunity is not due to a lack of ability.

It's because the heart cannot bear the pressure that comes with change.

The ancients said:

When the mind is chaotic, the spirit scatters; when the spirit scatters, opportunities are lost.

When the mind cannot be stable, even if an opportunity is right before you, it's hard to truly grasp it.

Why did the ancients emphasize "karma of opportunity"?

Taoists often say:

When the time is right, opportunity appears.

Here, "opportunity" does not refer to wealth or success.

Rather, it's a possibility for change.

For example:

  • The appearance of a person.

  • A job opportunity.

  • A decision to move.

  • A collaboration.

These things may seem accidental, but often, they will influence the future.

Therefore, the ancients believed:

When an opportunity arises, it requires both the opportunity itself and preparation.

If one's mind remains chaotic, even the best timing can be missed.

Why are some people always hesitant?

People who have been in a long period of low spirits often develop a habit.

They constantly ask themselves:

  • What if I fail?

  • What if I lose money?

  • What if I make a mistake?

This kind of thinking can protect oneself.

But at the same time, it also prevents one from moving forward.

Over the years, I've found that many people who miss opportunities are not timid.

Rather, they have experienced too many setbacks in the past.

So they begin to habitually refuse risks.

If you always miss opportunities, you can start by considering these issues

① Are you overly afraid of failure?

Many decisions are not as serious as imagined.

But fear can amplify risks infinitely.

② Do you always want to wait until everything is perfectly certain?

In reality, there are rarely 100% certain opportunities.

Excessive waiting often means missing out.

③ Do you consistently deny yourself?

If a person always thinks:

"I can't do it."

Then when an opportunity arises, they won't believe in themselves either.

④ Are you overly focused on results?

When all attention is placed on success and failure, people are unable to focus on the present moment.

Why does Taoism emphasize "guarding the heart"?

The ancients believed:

When the mind is stable, opportunities become apparent.

When a person's inner self gradually stabilizes.

Anxiety decreases.

Distractions decrease.

Many opportunities that were previously unseen will then emerge.

Therefore, many Taoist practices first emphasize:

  • Calming the spirit.

  • Stabilizing the mind.

  • Gathering energy.

Only when the inner self is stable can a person more easily see opportunities and seize them.

If you feel like you're always missing opportunities lately

You can try to:

✓ Reduce overthinking.

✓ Stop repeatedly denying yourself.

✓ Set a deadline for yourself to take action.

✓ Accept uncertainty.

✓ Maintain a stable daily routine.

Many times, opportunities haven't decreased.

It's just that we weren't ready to receive them.

Why did ancient people use Ruyi Talismans?

In traditional Taoist practices, the Ruyi Talisman is not meant to help people instantly achieve their wishes.

It emphasizes more on:

  • Clarifying goals.

  • Firming direction.

  • Stabilizing the mind.

  • Reducing hesitation.

Many people would use the Ruyi Talisman during:

  • Exam periods.

  • Job-seeking stages.

  • Startup phases.

  • Life turning points.

They hoped to remind themselves to stay focused and not be influenced by fear.

The Luck-Changing Talisman, on the other hand, was used more during times of hardship.

The roles of these two in tradition are not entirely the same.

Conclusion

Some opportunities are missed.

Not because fate is unkind.

But because we are not yet ready.

The ancients said:

When the time comes, heaven and earth work together.

When one's state gradually stabilizes and direction becomes clearer, many things that were once missed may reappear in another way.

Therefore, instead of constantly regretting the past.

It's better to make yourself a person who can embrace the next opportunity.
